Hard Rock Chromite Ore Processing Plant: Crushing, Grinding & Gravity Separation

Project Overview: Hard Rock Chromite Ore Processing Plant

This page showcases a complete chromite ore processing plant designed for hard rock deposits, specifically based on a successful project in Madagascar. Unlike alluvial chrome washing, hard rock chromite requires a more comprehensive flow sheet to liberate the valuable minerals. Therefore, this process integrates multi-stage crushing, closed-circuit grinding, and highly efficient gravity separation. The ultimate goal is to produce high-grade lumpy chrome concentrate while minimizing the generation of fine slimes.

Step-by-Step Processing Flow Based on the 3D Layout

The 3D flow sheet illustrates the complete processing stages. First of all, raw ore is fed by an excavator into the ore bin, and an electromagnetic vibrating feeder continuously delivers the material to the primary crusher.

  • Stage 1: Two-Stage Crushing & Screening: The raw ore is first crushed by a PE Jaw Crusher. The output is sent via a belt conveyor to a Circular Vibrating Screen. Subsequently, the oversized material returns to a PEX Jaw Crusher for secondary crushing, forming a closed-circuit crushing system. This ensures the material is reduced to a suitable size (e.g., <10mm) for the grinding stage.

  • Stage 2: Coarse Grinding & Classification: The crushed ore enters a Ball Mill for grinding. It is important to note that we use “coarse grinding” here, typically controlling the fineness around 1mm. This avoids over-grinding, which would create excessive slime and make gravity separation difficult. The ball mill operates in a closed circuit with a Spiral Classifier, which returns coarse particles back to the mill and sends qualified slurry (around 1mm) to the next stage.

  • Stage 3: Spiral Chute Gravity Separation: The classified slurry is pumped by a Submerged Slurry Pump to an Ore Distributor. Consequently, the slurry is evenly fed into multiple Spiral Chutes. Because chromite has a high specific gravity, the spiral chutes effectively separate the heavy chromite particles from the lighter gangue, producing a high-grade chrome concentrate.

Why Control Grinding Fineness at 1mm?

In chromite ore processing, controlling the grinding fineness is critical. First of all, if the ore is ground too fine (e.g., <0.074mm), it creates a large amount of slime, which is easily lost during gravity separation. Secondly, over-grinding consumes excessive energy and reduces the capacity of the ball mill. Therefore, by using a closed-circuit system and controlling the classifier overflow at around 1mm, we ensure that the chromite is sufficiently liberated from the gangue while maintaining a coarse particle size. As a result, the spiral chutes can operate at maximum efficiency, recovering both coarse and medium-sized chromite particles effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between hard rock chromite processing and alluvial chrome washing?
A: Alluvial chrome can usually be washed and screened directly. Hard rock chromite requires crushing and grinding to liberate the ore from the rock matrix before gravity separation.

Q: Why use a spiral chute instead of a shaking table?
A: Spiral chutes have a much larger processing capacity and are highly efficient for recovering particles in the 1mm to 0.1mm range. They are ideal for the primary roughing of chromite ore.

Q: Is the 1mm grinding size fixed?
A: While 1mm is a common target for coarse chromite liberation, the exact fineness depends on your specific ore’s dissemination size. We conduct ore tests to determine the optimal grinding size for your project.
